Father Michael Joseph McGivney
(August 12, 1852 – August 14, 1890)
2017-09-12
Father Michael J. McGivney's views on the interstate extension of the Order (into other states) had changed considerably since he made his 1883 statement in which he limited the Order's growth to the parishes in the state of Connecticut. As a very active Pastor in Thomaston concerned with the heavy indebtedness of the Saint Thomas Church, he deferred to the lay leaders of the Order. Though he must, as its Pastor, have been intimately concerned with its professional development and personally gratified by its “wondrous growth” there were no documents to reveal his role in the business of the Order. He continued an active role in this critical situation which indicated his consistent concern for the welfare of the Order.
At the Board of Government meeting held on June 27, 1889, Supreme Knight Phelan made an impassioned plea that the Order express its gratitude to its founder. The committee on the Good of the Order proposed a resolution authorizing the Order to pay $1,000 to Father McGivney “as a testimony of .the gratitude of the Order for his past services on its behalf”. The resolution was adopted by a rising and unanimous vote.
On the Feast of the Assumption, the day after he died, the Waterbury Republican newspaper simply stated, “Father McGivney was well-known throughout Connecticut. Both his conception and execution of the idea of organizing the Order of the Knights of Columbus brought him great prominence. He was full of vitality and energy. His efforts were uniformly successful. His unassuming manner was symbolized at his funeral”. The Waterbury Republican newspaper also reported that there were counted more than 250 Knights in attendance at the funeral and that there were estimated to be more than 5,000 other people also in attendance.
Father McGivney was indeed a “Man of the People”.
We, as an organization, mourned his passing and we became stronger Catholics!
