DID YOU KNOW?
The Organizational Structure
2016-07-12
The initial Organizational Structure of the Knights of Columbus reflected the democratic features of the American system of government. Subordinate councils elected their own leaders as well as the representatives who, with Grand Knight and Past Grand Knights, composed the Supreme Council, which elected the Supreme Officers.
The Supreme Council was the Legislative Branch; the Supreme Committee was the Executive Branch. However, because the Supreme Committee was responsible to the Supreme Council, it was analogous to the British Parliamentary-Cabinet system of government rather than to the American constitutional separation of powers.
The Supreme Knight was the Chief Executive Officer in that he was charged with executing the law, but he was subject to the advice and consent of the Supreme Committee. However, because the Supreme Knight embodied the fraternal ideals of the Order, he possessed moral authority far beyond the letter of his mandate.
The Supreme Secretary was implicitly the Chief Administrative Officer, symbolized by his responsibility for the Seal of the Order. Since the management of the insurance and sick-benefit business was lodged in the Supreme Committee, the duties of the officers reflected the corporate structures which were evolving during the period of rapid expansion of the American industry and commerce.
This elaborate system of government clearly indicates the long range intentions of Father McGivney and his founding Knights. They envisioned the Order as a state-wide organization, the Connecticut Knights of Columbus. Though based upon sound business practices, the Knights were unlike commercial life insurance companies, as they were motivated by the principle of Charity rather than by profit: [quote] “The object of this association is to promote the principles of Unity and Charity - so that in our Unity we may gain strength to bestow Charity on each other.” [end quote]
In an undated circular the practical character of the Order was clearly projected. After noting the advantages of belonging to an Order founded on Unity and Charity, one which would pay $5 per week during sickness and $1,000 upon the death of a member (once there were 1,000 members), Father McGivney provided detailed instructions on the process of forming new councils.
The minimum membership for a new council was twelve (12) gentlemen who had passed the physical examination. After a council was formed, new councils were instructed to follow a series of sixteen (16) directives – Father McGivney's principles for sound management. He was quite concerned that Council Leaders realize their responsibilities as “Field Agents” in the Order's Life Insurance business. All leaders were Field Agents!
